7 Layer Chem is another new strain from Sunburn Cannabis that was released on February 9, 2023. The genetics on this one are quite interesting, with essentially a lot of Chemdog crossed with Wedding Cake, aka Pink Cookies.

I’m not sure what factors Sunburn considers when pricing their flower, but I noticed both this and the Toxic Lemons are some of the first of their new strains to be priced at $45/eighth as opposed to $55. It will be interesting to see how these strains stack up to recent Sunburn additions such as Petrol Station and Chem De La Wilson.

Appearance/Cure

Of the two new $45 strains, 7 Layer Chem is the better looking one. Where the Toxic Lemons looked like it might have been harvested a bit prematurely, 7 Layer Chem doesn’t look like that – the trichomes are mix of cloudy and amber colored, with a few clear ones here and there.

The buds are very slightly dry on the outside, to the point that they snap apart into smaller pieces pretty easily. Those smaller pieces have better moisture content, but are still slightly dry.

The flower breaks up into a texture that is somewhere between the favorable “fluffy” or “spongy” texture, and a more sandy, dry, dusty texture. Again, the flower could do to be a little less dry.

Other than that, the smaller things like the trim job are looking solid as well. Pretty good flower all around.

Smell/Taste

After trying and reviewing over 150 different flower strains, it’s getting harder and harder to find ones that smell truly unique. However, this 7 Layer Chem is one of those – it doesn’t smell too much like any other particular strain I’ve had.

The smell in the bag is like a sweet fruit and vanilla cake, with very faint hints of hash. There’s a very light fruity/candy-like smell, definitely some vanilla there, a smell of generic cake batter, sugar, and faint hints of cherry, butter, and hash. I don’t smell the Chemdog lineage much, if at all.

While most strains smell quite different in the jar/bag vs. once they’re ground up or broken apart, 7 Layer Chem smells almost identical in both forms. There may be a little more woody/earthy smell, and some faint hints of funk that come out, but it doesn’t change much or get much more intense when it’s ground up.

The Wedding Cake lineage definitely comes through in the taste: sweet and hashy cake on both the inhale and exhale. It also leaves a sugary taste lingering on the tongue for a little while after the exhale.

Effects/Medical Use

Sunburn has got the right classification of 7 Layer Chem in their strain announcement email; I agree with them labeling it an indica-dominant hybrid. This is one of those strains where the warm, relaxing body-enveloping effects come on very soon after the first hit. The cerebral stimulation is there as well, but the body (or “indica”) effects are what make this strain memorable.

7 Layer Chem seems like one of those strains that could be used all day depending on the dosage. With a lighter dosage, I could see it working well to help with easing into the day. I think that there’s a fine line there, though, and going with too strong of a dose is going to leave you feeling lazy and lethargic – sort of like I’m feeling now as I write this review after taking a few hits at the beginning, and again when writing out the description of the taste. I’m not just dozing off and faceplanting into my keyboard.. but I sort of have this look going on:

In any case, 7 Layer Chem is probably going to serve you better in the late afternoon to evening time, or when you don’t have any obligations or a to-do list to tackle.

The more I write this, the more relaxed my body is getting. I might could even take a nap. Seems like a good strain for kicking back and watching a movie.

Overall, I would best describe this eighth of 7 Layer Chem as a “good” hybrid strain from Sunburn.
